Trim Levels

The 2022 Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck offered in four trim levels: S, SV, Pro-4X, and Platinum Reserve. These four trim levels allow Nissan to reduce complexity while allowing buyers to find a truck that meets their needs. The Nissan Titan is further configurable with a King Cab or Crew Cab, depending on the size needs of the driver.
In contrast, Ford offers its 2022 F-150 truck in eight trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited, Tremor, and Raptor. The cab options are regular, SuperCab, and SuperCrew, but not all trim levels are available with each cab.
Exterior Equipment
Following a full redesign of the Titan in 2020, the 2022 model showcases eye-catching features and sleek styling. With the base model, you get 18-inch steel wheels and halogen headlights. Upgrades available on the higher trims include larger alloy wheels, LED lighting, power-folding side mirrors, and chrome running boards. Buyers can also customize the truck’s look with two-tone exterior paint with the Platinum Reserve trim. If you plan to take your truck off-roading, the Pro-4X is the most capable of the bunch, with front tow hooks, a skid plate, and a protective bed liner.
The base XL trim of the F-150 is more sparsely equipped with manually adjustable side mirrors and smaller steel wheels. It’s also not as customizable.
Cabin Features
When you climb into the cabin of the 2022 Titan, its size and layout will impress you. This truck boasts ample storage space and plenty of room for people in both rows. The wide doors allow for easy entry and exit, and the view from the driver’s seat is excellent. Even the base model includes cloth upholstery, a six-speaker audio system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, an 8-inch touch screen, and a 7-inch driver information display.
Comfort upgrades on the higher trims include a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. You can also get a premium 12-speaker audio system, a larger 9-inch touch screen, and integrated navigation.
The F-150’s base trim is much more basic, featuring vinyl flooring and manual accessories within the cabin. It does, however, offer smartphone integration and a touch screen. You can add options such as dual-zone climate control, heated and ventilated seats, and leather upholstery, but you’ll have to choose one of the much higher trim levels to do so.
Safety Equipment
The standard suite of safety features on the Titan beats most other trucks in the segment, including the F-150. Nissan bundles active aids in its Safety Shield 360 suite, such as forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning with steer assist. Rear parking sensors with rear automatic braking also come standard, as does a trailer-sway control system that helps to control movement when the truck is towing a trailer. A rearview camera is also included with every model. The top Platinum Reserve trim adds front parking sensors as standard.
Ford also has a suite of active driver aids, but it only includes forward-collision mitigation and lane-departure warning. The XLT tacks on blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and rear automatic braking. To get some of the more advanced active driver aids, you’ll have to upgrade to the King Ranch model. This trim includes adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist.
Engine and Power
The 2022 Titan has just one powertrain option, keeping it simple for buyers who don’t want to pore over specs and capabilities. It boasts a 5.6-liter V-8 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. The unit pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission that powers the rear wheels on all models except the Pro-4X, which comes standard with Nissan’s four-wheel-drive system. You can upgrade the other trims to include four-wheel drive.
Ford offers six different engine options in its F-150, making the task of choosing somewhat more complex for buyers. The base model also isn’t nearly as powerful as the Titan’s engine. This unit, a 3.3-liter V-6, produces 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. A turbocharged gas-powered unit is available, but you can’t get close to the output ratings of the Titan until you get to the optional 5.0-liter V-8 unit, which puts out 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque.
Towing and Hauling Capacities
When properly equipped, the Titan can tow up to 9,310 pounds. In the large bed, you can haul up to 1,650 pounds of payload. Another advantage of the Titan is the design of the bed, which makes it easier to reach over the sides for loading and unloading. Many other trucks in its segment have taller sides, which limit what you can lift over them, requiring loading and unloading to go through the tailgate. The Pro-4X trim comes standard with a towing receiver hitch, although it’s optional on the other trims.
The F-150 can tow up to 14,000 pounds, although only models with specific configurations can reach that number. It can also carry up to 3,325 pounds of payload with the proper equipment.
Fuel Economy
If fuel efficiency is a top priority, you’ll be pleased to know the Titan returns an estimated 18 mpg combined. Since it has only one engine option, the only factor that affects the fuel economy is whether you opt for rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The F-150 can deliver better fuel economy ratings, but the improved efficiency comes at a cost. The optional hybrid powertrain returns an estimated 24 mpg combined, but its towing and hauling capacities are significantly reduced.
