WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CAR BREAKS DOWN - ST. LOUIS, MO

When your car breaks down or you encounter car trouble while driving, it can be a harrowing and frustrating experience. Obviously you would prefer to avoid this kind of thing altogether, but sometimes that's just not possible.

In the event that your vehicle breaks down, there are a number of steps you can take to be sure that you're as safe as possible. These steps will also help you get back on the road as quickly as is safe and possible!

·         Try to get off the road. If you can, coast onto the shoulder on a straight road with no curves around. This will be safer, as oncoming vehicles will be able to see you and avoid hitting your vehicle.

·         Stay in your vehicle. If you are stuck on the road in a broken down vehicle, stay in your car. It can be incredibly dangerous to step out into traffic.

·         Put your hazard lights on. These flashing lights will help alert fellow motorists that you are stopped, and can help you stay out of an accident.

·         Call for help. Use your cell phone to call roadside assistance or highway patrol to help you. After you've called, remain in your vehicle until help arrives, if you're stopped in the roadway.

·         Put out warning lights or reflective markers. If you're on a road that's not well-traveled, and thus it's safe to get out of your vehicle, put the reflective markers that you should keep in your emergency kit in front of and behind your vehicle.

·         Don't work on your vehicle unless you're on the side that's away from traffic. If you need to work on something on your car or need to fix a flat tire, and it's on the side that's exposed to traffic, it's best to wait for help. Only work on your vehicle on the side that's safely away from oncoming vehicles.
